I think we caught a Powerful Owl on the trail camera

Endangered in Victoria, powerful owls are a rare sight.

We’ve seen one skimming down the track before, but this is the first photo we’ve got. The video shows it more clearly….

Sitting on a tree guard in the blue gum clearing – might be a good place to hunt.

The Powerful Owl is the largest owl in Australasia. It’s a typical hawk-owl, with large yellow eyes and no facial-disc. The adults reach 60 cm in length with a wingspan of up to 140 cm – big birds! The main prey are possums of various species, although large bats such as flying foxes are also often caught. We’ve got possums, antechinus and the occasional rabbit…
